Tai Chi Classes for All

Tai chi (太极) is an ancient Chinese martial art that is practiced for health and self-defense purposes. It is a type of moving meditation in which breathing is coordinated with a series of fluid movements and postures.

Different forms of tai chi incorporate different postures, and sometimes props such as swords or fans. Tai chi without props is called tai chi chuan (chuan means "fist"). Qi gong, which is often used as a warm-up for tai chi practice, consists of slow, gentle movements coordinated with breathing exercises to promote the flow of qi (the body's vital life force energy).

Both tai chi and qi gong offer numerous benefits, including stress reduction, improved posture, increased mindfulness, and enhanced energy levels. Regular practice improves balance, flexibility, and strength while fostering relaxation and focus.

While it is possible to become familiar with tai chi by studying videos, doing so can result in injury due to incorrect movements or postures. This is why in-person classes that offer individual feedback from a knowledgable instructor are essential for learning tai chi.

Tina currently offers classes in the Yang-family style tai chi chuan 8-, 13-, 16-, 24-, and 48-forms, and the combined style 42-form. She also teaches 18-form fan, and 16- and 32-form sword. Mastery of any of these forms may take years, but persistence is the only requirement for learning tai chi. Thus, while the 8- and 24-form tai chi chuan are considered the most basic, students of all levels are welcome in all of Tina's classes. People with limited mobility may participate in a chair. Check the Schedule page for current classes offered, or contact Tina for more information.
