Designed especially for seniors, this class improves balance and coordination primarily by strengthening relevant muscles in the legs, abdominal core, back, and shoulders. Tina uses a multifaceted approach to provide a gentle but comprehensive workout that achieves this goal. Ongoing participation will increase students’ proprioception, stability, and control over their body positions and movements. Class takes place at the Davis Senior Center, and is ideal for anyone wanting to improve their balance ability. Check the Schedule page or contact Tina for more information.
Each class begins with a 5-to-10-minute warm-up involving low-impact movements and light stretching to loosen the muscles and slightly increase the heart rate. During the main workout, students engage in a series of slow, natural movements and static postures carefully designed to strengthen the muscles involved in balance. The series varies from class to class, but individual postures and movements are drawn from other fitness disciplines, including yoga, Pilates, martial arts, and various dance styles. Accompanying music and abdominal breathing exercises coordinated with the movements will provide an opportunity to practice rhythm and focus.
Designed especially to benefit seniors, this class involves easy-to-follow sitting and standing movements for improving strength and balance as well as flexibility and coordination. Tina uses a multifaceted approach to provide a thorough workout appropriate for all fitness levels and abilities. Bring hand weights if desired. First class is free!
Q: I haven’t exercised in years/have never participated in a fitness class. Can I join these classes?
A: Yes! Tina is a professional coach and provides students with options for varying the intensity of movements and postures, so beginners and people at all fitness levels will be comfortable in both Body Balance and Strength & Balance classes.
Q: Can individuals who use walking aids participate?
A: Yes! Students may hold on to a walker or the back of a chair during class. Participation in either class will increase core control and balance, so it can help reduce dependency on walking aids. Note: your safety is our top priority, so we recommend discussing participation with your healthcare provider before joining.
Q: Are these classes appropriate for pregnant women?
A: Yes! Body Balance and Strength & Balance classes use natural movements to improve muscle tone and strength. Participation will increase core strength and endurance, which are beneficial for the childbirth process. Note: your safety is our top priority, so we recommend discussing participation with your healthcare provider before joining.
Q: Do I need to wear something specific or bring anything to class?
A: Wear comfortable stretchy clothes and shoes, and bring a bottle of water. Hand weights are used in the Strength & Balance classes, so bring these if desired (other equipment is provided).
